Hydroponic
Fodder Inc.
Hydroponic Fodder Inc., a JERA Ltd. company, located in Toronto,
Ontario, was established in 2003 to supply the equine industry
with all-natural, hydroponically grown fodder. Fodder are
specialty grasses grown specifically for horses. The Toronto
facility alone can produce enough product to facilitate 160
horses daily. This state-of-the-art growing facility utilizes
the latest technology with respect to growing lamps and hydroponic
systems. Christine Onodi, Director of Operations for Hydroponic
Fodder explains "by using advanced lighting methods,
namely Sunmaster's 400 watt Cool Deluxe grow lamps, and moving
these lamps throughout the fodder tables, we have been able
to produce a much healthier product with significantly higher
yields".
Hydroponic
Fodder's main market is the standardbred and thoroughbred
horses. Chris goes on to explain that "These horses are
superb athletes. They represent a huge financial investment
by the owners, trainers and track officials. Due to the nature
of their sport the horses have to live at the track year-around
throughout their racing career. Grazing areas are limited
to non existent at most race tracks. Horses need fresh fodder
daily to help in the prevention of colic which unfortunately,
is the # 1 killer of horses in all disciplines." Hydroponic
Fodder's product was featured in a documentary filmed and
produced by The Discovery Channel. The topic was the safety
of thoroughbred horses.
